Opening game of 2026 ends in defeat

A cracking game played in dreadful conditions, as Folkestone edged out the Royals.

We started brightly and were on the front foot for the opening 10 minutes, but with nothing to show for it. Then suddenly we found ourselves 2–0 down and pinned back in our own half for the next 15 minutes. Folkestone’s second was an outstanding free-kick.

A moment of composure from Thomas got us back into the game in the 27th minute, tucking away a lovely finish to make it 2–1.

The second half was much more even, with both sides playing some good football, though clear-cut chances were limited.

In the final five minutes we really turned the screw and were playing our best football of the game. Unfortunately, with virtually the last attack, we lost possession and Folkestone broke away to seal it.

Special mentions to Frank, who kept us in the game with countless saves, and Archie S, who was excellent at breaking up play in midfield.
